The current president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association is Mark Ellen Emmert. He is the NCAA’s fifth CEO, having been named incoming president on April 27, 2010, and taking office on November 1, 2010.

Emmert was formerly the 30th president of his alma mater, the University of Washington, entering office in June 2004 and became the first alumnus to lead the university in 48 years.

“Throughout my tenure, I’ve highlighted the importance of focusing on student-athlete experience and priorities,” Emmert stated. “I am tremendously proud of the Association’s achievements over the previous 12 years, particularly the devotion and hard work of the national office team here in Indianapolis.”

“With substantial shifts occurring in college sports, the timing of this decision offers the Association with consistent leadership over the coming months, as well as the chance to contemplate what the president’s future role will be,” DeGioia stated. “It also allows for the seamless selection and recruitment of the next president.”

 In January, NCAA member schools approved a new constitution, and they are already working to update the structure and mission to meet future demands.

From 1991 to 1995, Emmert was the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Montana State University. He oversaw a successful campaign to expand research funding at the university, primarily from the National Science Foundation, in this post, together with vice president for research Robert Swenson. Emmert joined the University of Connecticut as Provost in 1995 and was later moved to the chancellor for academic affairs, where he managed academic matters at both the main campus in Storrs and the university’s regional campuses.

In 1999, he was chosen Chancellor of LSU. He oversaw the formation of the “Flagship Agenda,” an endeavor credited with greatly advancing the university’s position as an academic institution, and which is currently credited with significantly advancing the university. From 2004 until 2010, Mark served as president of his alma school, the University of Washington.

During his tenure, the university received record amounts of research money, private donations, and public assistance. Undergraduate student qualifications and graduation rates have likewise surpassed previous records. Emmert was named president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 27, 2010. He took over as president on November 1, 2010, and is still in office today.
