When the race was restarted after a red flag with five circuits remaining, Ericsson was within touching distance of all the other cars, resulting in a two-lap sprint to the finish.

Over the final sprint, Ericsson had to hold off Pato O’Ward, with the race ending under a yellow flag for a collision unrelated to the red flag incident.

Regardless, Ericsson was 1.7929 seconds ahead of O’Ward at the finish line, delivering the 31-year-old his maiden Indy 500 victory.

Ericsson said that the race’s conclusion added stress to an already stressful position, but he expected additional challenges as the final laps approached.

“You can never take anything for granted, and obviously there were still laps to go [when the restart happened after the red flag], and I was praying so hard there wasn’t going to be another yellow, but I knew there would be one, and it was hard to refocus,” Ericsson said after the race to NBC Sports. “But, even though I knew the car was incredible, it was still difficult. I needed to do everything I could right then and there to keep them at bay. I’m speechless; I’m overjoyed.”

He moved up to the British team’s British Formula Three Championship squad after a successful start in car racing in 2007, when he won the British Formula BMW title with Fortec Motorsport. After finishing as one of the top rookies in the category, Ericsson moved on to the All-Japan Formula Three Championship, which he won in his first season.

In 2010, he advanced to the GP2 Series, where he won one race in his first season with Super Nova Racing. Ericsson was an iSport driver between 2011 and 2012. Ericsson finished the GP2 season with DAMS in 2013 and made his Formula One debut with Caterham F1 in 2014. He is patient, but when he does go for it, everything comes together wonderfully.
