Frank O’Farrell was born on October 9, 1927 (Age 94 Years old), in Blackpool, Cork, County Cork, Munster, Ireland. John “Buck” McGrath, a well-known bowls player, was his grandfather. He grew up as a devout Catholic who attended Christ the King Church.
In 1941, he captained the school’s Gaelic football team to its first trophy triumph. He also played association football for local clubs Nicholas Rovers, Clapton Celtic, and Western Rovers, where he played alongside Noel Cantwell’s brother, with whom he would eventually reconnect as a West Ham United teammate.
He began working on the trains at the age of 16 and aspired to be a train driver like his father. On the Dublin–Cork railway line, he served as a fireman.

After Tommy Moroney’s departure to West Ham United in 1947, O’Farrell began his playing career with League of Ireland club Cork United, replacing him in the first team. In a straight exchange deal including Eddie Lewis, O’Farrell left for Preston North End in November 1956. He scored in his home debut, a 20-yard strike against Manchester City, after replacing Ray Evans in the team.
On 7 May 1952, in a 6–0 defeat to Austria in Vienna, O’Farrell earned his first of nine full international caps for Ireland.
O’Farrell scored the first of his two international goals in Ireland’s 4–0 victory over Austria at Dalymount Park in Dublin in his second international game.
He didn’t play for another six years before making his tenth and final international appearance on May 10, 1959, in a 4–0 loss to Czechoslovakia at Bratislava’s Tehelne Pole Stadion. When Green left Torquay in May 1981, he took over as manager again, but resigned the following year, this time in July 1982, following the appointment of Bruce Rioch. He was the general manager until he retired in 1983 at the age of 55.
