Louise Minchin has spoken out about her impending resignation from the BBC Breakfast show. In June, the long-serving broadcaster announced her departure from the BBC morning show, 20 years after she initially joined.
Minchin explained why she was quitting the show permanently ahead of her final episode on Wednesday (15 September).
The 53-year-old said that she had begun struggling with the early starts after taking time off to recover from an ankle operation last year.
“In December I’d taken three, four weeks off work because of an ankle operation and I had that period to realize that when I’m not getting up at 3:40 am in the morning, I’m doing all sorts of things in the evening that I want to be doing – like just watching telly with my family, doing that kind of family stuff…” she told.
“I believe the choice was taken when we transitioned from winter to this period.”
“I have found them incredibly hard,” Minchin said, adding that lockdown had made her realize she “truly struggled” with the early hours.
She expressed her delight at the prospect of spending mornings with her family.
Dan Walker, Minchin’s co-host, tweeted a tribute to her tenure on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday evening, just before her final program (14 September).
He wrote, “I can’t believe it’s happened so quickly [smile-cry emojis].”
