Mushroom Collector, Lois Chartrand, dies at 74

An experienced mushroom picker Lois Chartrand went lost in a highly forested location 32 kilometers northeast of Smeaton, along the Hanson Lake Road. According to authorities, Chartrand was last seen about 11 a.m. on August 4 while harvesting mushrooms northeast of Smeaton, Saskatchewan. Chartrand and a companion took a quad down a trail into the forest to go mushroom picking. While gathering mushrooms, they lost visual contact with one another.

According to the Saskatchewan RCMP, the search was, helped by multiple police K9 units, an Alberta RCMP helicopter, and the Saskatoon Police Service.

Additionally, there is the Civilian Air Search and Rescue Association, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, Heli Recon, and the Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers in Search and Rescue. With support from others from the community, the woodland was scoured. Additionally, local businessmen and residents provided food and materials to aid the search activities.

The site where Chartrand vanished had no cell phone service, however on August 5, about 6:00 a.m., the RCMP last made radio contact with Chartrand. Following that, they were unable to contact Chartrand. Sadly, rescuers recovered Lois Chartrand’s death on Sunday in woodland about a kilometer from where she, was last seen.
