Lloyd McWilliams, a golf instructor for kids in Rockford, passed away at the age of 76, according to the Rockford Park District. Prior to his death, McWilliams was battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
In the Rockford golf scene, McWilliams was a standout both as a student and a teacher. The late golfer won three Gold Medal Classic competitions and five Rockford City Men’s Championships. Because of his efforts, Lloyd was accepted into the Greater Rockford Golf Hall of Fame in 2005.
The Rockford legend had some of his greatest effects later in his golfing career, when, at age 63, he became a pro and joined the PGA as a teacher. When McWilliams was selected as one of the top 50 junior instructors in 2014 by U.S. Kids, his instruction garnered him widespread acclaim.
Lloyd was clearly inspirational and transformed our community’s youth, adults, and senior golfers into not only better golfers, but better people,” Rockford Park District Operations Manager David Spencer said.
“We will continue Lloyd’s legacy through many programs here at the RPD, but will not be able to replace him, he is already missed,” Spencer added.
