A Canadian television journalist named Lisa LaFlamme OC OOnt was once CTV National News’ main anchor and senior editor. On September 5, 2011, she succeeded Lloyd Robertson in this position. LaFlamme has previously worked for CTV National News as an international affairs correspondent and fill-in host.
Canadian Association of Journalists is concerned about CTV National News management’s interference with editorial freedom.
The Bell-owned network’s nightly program, CTV National News, has come under investigation since main anchor Lisa LaFlamme’s resignation, and the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) has expressed concerns about journalistic independence there.
According to three CTV sources who spoke to CBC News on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter, management ordered the removal of images or video of LaFlamme from a TV story about Dove’s “Keep the Grey” campaign that was scheduled to air on Wednesday.
According to Dove, the campaign was started in reaction to the public dialogue that has been going on regarding gray hair and ageism in the workplace. LaFlamme wasn’t specifically mentioned by the firm, but many have linked the advertising to her termination as the lead anchor at CTV National News.
Recent media reports suggested that her dismissal may have been related to her choice to forgo hair coloring during the pandemic. Bell Media, the parent firm of CTV, vehemently refutes this assertion.
Delete Photographs or videos of LaFlamme
The decision to delete photographs or videos of LaFlamme from the piece was reportedly made by Richard Gray, the regional manager of Bell Media’s eastern area. Michael Melling’s replacement as acting vice-president of news, Gray, was just appointed.
“If this passes — and is allowed to pass — what happens the next time?” CAJ president Brent Jolly said in an interview with CBC News.
“At what point does the issue of editorial independence become questioned? This is not a legal issue. It’s an issue of shaping the focus and tenor of the story.”
