Lily Safra was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil On December 30, 1934. At the time of her passing, she was 87 years old. She was the daughter of Annita Noudelman de Castro, an Uruguayan of Russian and Jewish descent, and Wolf White Watkins, a Czechoslovak railway engineer who immigrated to South America during the electrification of Brazilian railroads.

She was raised in Rio de Janeiro before relocating to Montevideo, Uruguay, with her family.

In recognition of her consistent commitment, Safra received the “An Enduring Vision” award from the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 2009. Safra promised to provide €10 million in April 2019 for the rebuilding of Notre Dame de Paris following the fire.
