Brazilian Billionaire, Lily Safra, dies at aged 87

Lily Safra was a Brazilian-Monegasque billionaire and socialite who was known for providing support to hundreds of organizations across the globe.

Safra died on Saturday, July 9, in Geneva, Switzerland, surrounded by family and friends.

According to a representative for the Edmond J. Safra Foundation, she died on Saturday in Geneva from pancreatic cancer.

For more than two decades, Safra faithfully upheld her beloved husband Edmond’s philanthropic legacy, providing assistance to hundreds of organizations worldwide.

On Monday, July 11th, her funeral services will be held in Geneva.

Lily Safra was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil On December 30, 1934. At the time of her passing, she was 87 years old. She was the daughter of Annita Noudelman de Castro, an Uruguayan of Russian and Jewish descent, and Wolf White Watkins, a Czechoslovak railway engineer who immigrated to South America during the electrification of Brazilian railroads.

She was raised in Rio de Janeiro before relocating to Montevideo, Uruguay, with her family.

Given that she had been married four times, her four marriages were the main source of her vast riches. She married Mario Cohen, an Argentine hosiery tycoon of Italian-Jewish ancestry when she was 17 years old. Lily later got married to Alfredo Monteverde. He founded the Ponto Frio brand and was a pioneer in the marketing of home appliances in Brazil.

She then wed Samuel Bendahan, a businessman who was also a Sephardic Jew and had less affluence. Lastly, she wed Edmond Safra in 1976. The well-known banker was a Brazilian citizen via naturalization and of Lebanese Jewish (Mizrahi) descent. In New York, he established Republic National Bank.

Lily Safra was a member of the Chairman’s Council of the Museum of Modern Art. Lily Safra contributed to various charities, foundations, and groups. In 2005, Safra supported the American Red Cross and provided aid to Hurricane Katrina victims. Safra offered Geneva Christie’s an extraordinary auction of 70 pieces of her own jewelry collection in May 2012.

In recognition of her consistent commitment, Safra received the “An Enduring Vision” award from the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 2009. Safra promised to provide €10 million in April 2019 for the rebuilding of Notre Dame de Paris following the fire.
