Orlando Julius, a veteran highlife musician, died at the age of 79. Julius’ death was confirmed by his wife, Latoya Ekemode, in the early hours of Friday. Julius went out in his sleep on Thursday night, according to her.
“Yes, my husband died late last night; there were no signs that death was approaching; he was not ill; he simply slept and died in his sleep,” she explained. Bimbo Esho, a music promoter, verified the ‘A dara, a dara’ singer’s death.

Orlando Julius was 79 years old when he died. He was born in 1943 in Ikole, Nigeria. He was born to a merchant family. His mother was a music teacher. Unfortunately, he lost in father in 1957. When he played drums, his mother taught him to sing and dance too.
He worked in a bakery while performing with juju and Konkoma bands on the drums or the flute. There was no music school in the area at the time, so Obafemi Awolowo, the premier, established one in the office of his political party. He spent time attempting to make contact with highlife musician Jazz Romero, performing chores for him in the hopes of gaining enough favor to receive music instruction.

In 1965, he got his first hit with “Jagua Nana,” a song that applied slang for Jaguar vehicles to a woman. Following the success of that song, they embarked on a tour throughout West Africa.
Super Afro Soul, released in 1966, was a “dramatic, highly melodic integration of soul, pop, and funk” that “gave him a national fame in Nigeria” and inspired American music, according to AllMusic.
Despite his influence, he was not well-known outside of the United States until the re-release of Super Afro Soul by Strut in 2000. The album Orlando Julius and the Afro Sounders, released in 1972, was reissued by Voodoo Funk in 2011. In 2014, he relocated to London to collaborate with The Heliocentrics and began traveling abroad.
