John Gwynne, a former darts pundit and broadcaster for Sky Sports, passed away at the age of 77 after a battle with cancer.

After 20 years of commentating on darts for Sky Sports, Gwynne, a member of the Professional Darts Corporation Hall of Fame, retired in 2013. He spent many years working for the BBC and was the primary cricket analyst for North West Tonight and local radio stations serving Lancashire. “John’s distinctive voice was part of the soundtrack to the PDC’s formative years as a part of the original Sky Sports commentary crew alongside Sid Waddell and Dave Lanning, and they created an iconic trio.” Lanning passed away in 2016, and Waddell did so in 2012.

Stuart Pyke, a friend and coworker of Gwynne, told the BBC that the man “was one of a kind and he’ll unfortunately be missed by so many people.” Dave Clark, a former coworker at Sky, added: “I was shocked to learn that John Gwynne, a friend and coworker, had passed away. In Manchester, Gwynne’s first job was as a teacher. Gwynne was a toastmaster and after-dinner speaker. Additionally, he oversaw regional darts competitions and MC’d darts exhibitions in the Manchester region.
