The iconic French cinema and stage actor Michel Bouquet died at the age of 96. Bouquet, a lion of French cinema and theatre, performed in over 100 films from the 1940s onwards.
On Wednesday, the Elysee Palace, the current French President Emmanuel Macron’s office, confirmed his death.
“It’s a sacred beast who has just left us,” Mr. Macron said in a statement.
“Michel Bouquet elevated theatre and cinema to the pinnacle of incandescence and honesty for seven decades, revealing a man in all his paradoxes with an intensity that burned the boards and shattered the screen,” he said on his website.

He was sent to a boarding school when he was seven years old, where he resided until he was fourteen years old. He wanted to be a doctor, but after his father was kidnapped during WWII, he had to drop out of school at the age of 15. Bouquet supported the family by working as a baker’s apprentice and eventually as a bank clerk. He returned to Paris with his mother after a brief stay in Lyon. He studied acting with Maurice Escande, a member of the Comedie Française, and made his stage debut in 1944 in the drama La premiere tape.

In the 1950s, the actor met Jean Vilar, a stage director with whom he would work regularly.
He made his stage debut in Eugene Ionesco’s Exit the King in 1994, a role he would reprise until 2014. He won the Molière Award for Best Actor for Bertrand Blier’s Les corselettes in 1998, and again in 2005 for Exit the King. In 2014, he was given the honorary title of Molière for his entire career.
Despite making his cinematic debut in 1947, Bouquet’s film career took longer to emerge. In 1982, he played Javert in Robert Hossein’s production of Les Miserables, alongside Lino Ventura as Jean Valjean and Jean Carmet as Thénardier, and he did so brilliantly that many Hugolians regard this performance as Javert’s incarnation.
Bouquet recorded and released DVDs of his readings of Cervantes, Victor Hugo, Jean-Paul Sartre, and other authors over the years. In 2019, he released an audiobook featuring his readings of 13 selected Jean de La Fontaine stories, which received widespread critical acclaim.
