Elder was drafted into the Army in 1959 and assigned to Fort Lewis, Washington. Elder had the good fortune to be under the command of Colonel John Gleaster, an avid golfer, while at Fort Lewis. He joined PGA and won 18 of 22 consecutive tournaments.

The PGA removed the color barrier in 1961, allowing non-white players to join. Elder raised enough money in 1967 to attend PGA Tour qualifying school. He finished 9th out of 122 in his class and earned his tour card for 1968. That year, he came in 40th on the money list, earning around $38,000.

Elder accepted Gary Player’s personal invitation to compete in the South African PGA Championship in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1971. The tournament was the first of its kind in the country’s history. He also competed in several other tournaments in Southern Africa and won the Nigerian Open in 1971.
