Iconic Hairstylist, Latisha Chong, Who Helped to Change Fashion, passed away at 32

After a battle with cancer, LaTisha Chong, the hairdresser who gave Serena her beachy locks, passed away on July 19. She had a 32-year-old age. Chong was well-known for her work on international Vogue covers and editorials, including Paloma Elsesser’s cover for American Vogue’s January 2021 issue. She was also known for being Telfar’s first-ever hair director and for working with a wide range of models and celebrities, including Jeremy O. Harris, Ziwe, and Adut Akech.

She was born in Trinidad and Tobago and immigrated to the US when she was six years old. Before working as a hair stylist, she served in the Air Force. Malachi, her 12-year-old son, her parents Darlene and Garrick, sisters Afesha and Tenisha, as well as the friends and family she cherished survive her.

Ian Isiah, musician and artist: “I met the Chongs before I met LaTisha. We’re all from Brooklyn, New York. Her family and my family were from Trinidad so there was already a connection there. So I knew all of them, but we didn’t really start hanging out until we were adults. LaTisha was quiet in the beginning because she was getting her feet wet, you know, finally settling on what she wanted to do as a dream which was different from how she was raised and being in the Air Force.

The second time we hung out I knew her whole story and she knew mine and we became close friends immediately. I was calming down from fashion and becoming an artist and musician, and I [was creating] my own team, and I brought LaTisha on. She was working in Michelle’s shop, which is an iconic shop in Flatbush that is the trademark staple center for what is known as the pixie cut, but also what we know, as Caribbeans, as African Americans, Black people… anyone growing up POC in the nineties, we have that awareness of finger waves or like shortcuts, all the artistic things you can do with really short hair.

She really had a gift, like she could create a whole map in a short head. Her whole family does hair. One time I got caught up at her house getting my hair done, and all of a sudden I had her and her two sisters all up in my hair and her mother was like ‘Yeah, I taught all of them.’ So she came from her, it was something that was a gift. Some people are gifted and some people are talented but LaTisha was both. She literally just reigned over both and we miss her.”
