On September 4, 1988, at the age of 22, Tate made his NFL debut with the Buccaneers, carrying for 30 yards in a 41–14 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. In his eleventh game of the season, he then produced a 106-yard effort against the Detroit Lions. He scored a 46-yard touchdown after being flipped at the line of scrimmage and landed on his feet in another memorable game during his rookie season.

Tate led all rookie running backs in the NFL during his first season in terms of touchdowns scored (8), was the leading rookie rusher in the National Football Conference (467 yards), and was also the Buccaneers’ captain. The year after, he led the team in rushing again while playing 15 games (14 starts) and finishing sixth in the league in terms of rushing touchdowns (8). Nevertheless, he was cut before the 1990 season even started following training camp.

In September 1990, Tate signed a contract with the Chicago Bears. He was only able to play in three games for the team, though, because of a neck injury that put him on injured reserve and threatened his future. As a result, the Bears placed him on their unprotected list and let his contract expire; he thus became a conditional free agent.
