Kyle Beach shared his account of sexual assault. Keep reading to learn more about the former Chicago Blackhawks player.
On the internet, the Blackhawks have gotten the most attention. In addition, an unnamed “John Doe” has linked them to the controversy, accusing them of mishandling sexual assault.
Former player “John Doe” turns out to be none other than Kyle Beach, a professional ice hockey player. To think that such a talented player is subjected to such heinous abuse.
Kyle speaks about an incident that occurred in 2010. He has only recently gained public recognition as a result of this, but his supporters have backed him up.
Senators weigh in on courage displayed by Kyle Beach
The Ottawa Senators were in Texas on Friday, but they kept Kyle Beach in Germany in their minds.
As the fallout from the Chicago Blackhawks controversy continues to ripple around the NHL, Senators head coach D.J. Smith says he is most concerned about the victim. Former Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville resigned as the bench boss of the Florida Panthers late Thursday.
“It’s just so awful that Kyle Beach had to go through that,” Smith said before the Senators’ game against the Stars on Friday night in Dallas.
“There has been a lot of talk about people being fired and losing their jobs. Imagine being that poor kid and having to deal with everything he’s had to deal with.”
Beach, who now plays in Germany, was a first-round choice of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2008 and practiced with the team during the 2010 NHL playoffs.
He claims he was sexually abused during an off-ice interaction with video coach Brad Aldrich. As the Blackhawks chased the 2010 Stanley Cup, he expressed his concerns to the team and the NHL Players’ Association, only to have them rejected.
Beach received no justice until last year, when an independent assessment revealed the Blackhawks’ failure to act, leading to the resignations of Chicago GM Stan Bowman and senior vice-president of hockey operations Al MacIsaac. The NHL also imposed a $2 million fine on the team. After meeting with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, Quenneville resigned.
Beach went public with his story earlier this week on TSN.
“It was said last night by (former NHL coach) John Tortorella,” Smith said. “How would you feel about this circumstance if it was your own son?” It would be devastating for my 17-year-old son (Colton), who plays junior hockey. Right now, all of my thoughts and actions are focused on (Beach) and all of the victims.
Smith believes that the old-school hockey culture, in which difficult matters were hidden in the locker room, is evolving.
“You have to do what’s right, and (the Blackhawks) didn’t do it in that situation,” he added. “I believe that people will improve their ability to do the right thing in the long run as a result of processes like this.” Maybe there was a culture previously, but I think it’s starting to rise now, and there’s still a long way to go.”
According to the Senators’ coach, the hockey world is slowly becoming more accommodating of mental health difficulties.
“(A player) should be able to go to the coach, trainer, or general manager and seek the aid he requires without fear of being judged.”
Connor Brown, a Senators winger, believes that the dressing room walls are crumbling in a lot of spots.
“With people’ livelihoods, mental health, and so many other things on the line, I believe those things should take precedence over winning,” Brown added.
He, like Smith, says he is thinking of Beach.
Brown stated, “I feel for him, it’s tough.” “And it takes a certain kind of fortitude to come forward and say something.” It paved the path for the next guy to have it easier. So that’s something essential we can take away from this… and build from.”
