The White House said, “Since taking office, Commissioner Saul has undermined and politicized Social Security disability benefits, terminated the agency’s telework policy, which was used by up to 25% of the agency’s workforce, failed to repair SSA’s relationships with relevant Federal employee unions, including in the context of COVID-19 workplace safety planning, and reduced due process protections for benefits appeals.”

Kilolo Kijakazi, the deputy commissioner for retirement and disability policy, was named acting commissioner by the president, according to a White House official.
However, according to The Washington Post, Saul intends to return to work on Monday.
“This was the first I or my deputy realized this was coming,” Saul told the newspaper, referring to the White House Personnel Office email he received on Friday morning. “It was an unexpected bolt of lightning. And it’s thrown the agency into disarray right now.”
