What did Kenny Mayne say about ESPN?

Mayne’s announcement drew a flood of praise and appreciation for his time at ESPN. It raised a major question: why would the organization let one of its most well-known and admired figures leave? Mayne said in an interview with The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch, “It was a major pay cut, a large pay cut to do basically the same job.” “I felt the difference was too much; it was a 14 percent reduction in time working and a 61 percent reduction in money gained. I’m not asking anybody to feel sorry for me; it was my decision to stay or not stay. It was still a decent sum of money in the real world.”

Kenny explained that he is happy and is not in fight with ESPN. He said “I wish them the best of luck.” The majority of my friends are there. Mayne said, “I’m not angry or in a huge fight with ESPN.” “For me, it didn’t work out.” They had to make a decision. They assigned a monetary value to my worth. I pitched several other ideas to them and offered to do more work for them, but they were uninterested. So it was simply a matter of time.

Mayne told Deitsch that it’s simply too early to say where he’ll end up next, but he’ll most likely remain in sports coverage and maybe do some commercial work.
