Kelly Tshibaka, Alaska’s Commissioner of Administration, has launched her candidacy for the Senate.

Alaska State Commissioner Kelly Tshibaka will declare her candidacy on Monday.

She’s running as the candidate for a new generation of Alaska conservatives.

Kelly has indicated that she will run as the candidate who will restore Alaska’s economy, defend small businesses, and fight for Alaskans’ rights and energy employment.

Pro-Trump challenger’s residency issues catch Murkowski’s eye

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska hasn’t indicated whether she’ll seek reelection in 2022, but she’s well aware of the baggage that one of her opponents may bring.

In an interview with CNN, Murkowski took aim at her potential GOP challenger, Kelly Tshibaka, over the candidate’s ties to Alaska, the first salvo in what could become the most high-profile proxy war between Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell and former President Donald Trump in the upcoming midterm elections.

Murkowski alluded to a state inquiry into whether Tshibaka got a fishing license for a sportfishing event in 2019 without living in the state for the previous year.

“Fishing is highly important to Alaskans,” Murkowski added. “She has an issue with her fishing license as well as her residence.”

“That’s not what I’m interested in,” she clarified. “That’s what other people are concerned about.”

When asked about her possible opponent, Murkowski responded, “I’m not familiar with her. She only returned to the state a few years ago.”

Tshibaka, a former Alaska Department of Administration commissioner, has offered herself as a vessel for Trump supporters, earning the former President’s endorsement in June as he embarked on a revenge campaign against Republicans like Murkowski, who believed he should have been convicted for inciting the January 6 insurgency for high crimes and misdemeanors.

Tshibaka, who has questioned Biden’s victory, faced further scrutiny in Alaska a month after winning Trump’s support.

Further Information

Tshibaka reportedly got a resident sportfishing license for a Kenai River sportfishing event in 2019 just eight months after she came back to Alaska, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Alaska Wildlife Troopers are investigating whether she received the permission unlawfully. Knowingly breaking state law is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $300, according to the article.

In August, the Associated Press reported that law enforcement officers had concluded their investigation and turned it over to the Alaska Department of Law.

Tshibaka was invited to the philanthropic event in her official role as Alaska’s Administration Department commissioner, according to Tim Murtaugh, a senior advisor to the Tshibaka campaign. He said the form was filled out for a license that had expired after one day, indicating a “clear purpose to acquire a non-resident license,” despite the fact that a resident license had already been punched in the hole.

“If Lisa Murkowski is ready to attack Kelly on this, she is plainly concerned about her,” Murtaugh added.

The Tshibaka advisor then went after the senator, claiming that she vowed to abolish the Affordable Care Act before voting to preserve it, and that she voted to confirm Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, who he described as “energy-annihilating.” “Murkowski has a long history of exhibiting a lack of integrity that has always resulted in the loss of Alaskan employment, rights, and safety,” Murtaugh stated.

One of Trump’s main priorities is Alaska, where he will almost certainly square battle against McConnell and his well-funded super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund.

When asked if his organization is willing to aid Murkowski, McConnell told CNN on Thursday, “Absolutely.”

He continued, “I fully anticipate her to run.”

“I am not announcing anything at this moment in time,” Murkowski said Thursday in the Capitol, when asked if she will run again.

When asked if she was concerned about facing a Trump-backed rival, she responded “not at all.”

“I have dealt with similar things in the past,” the moderate Republican remarked, referring to her 2010 campaign when she faced a backlash from conservative Republicans.

Murkowski and Tshibaka both claim to be Alaska natives. Tshibaka was born in Alaska and raised in Wasilla and Anchorage, according to her campaign website. Tshibaka served in the offices of the inspector general for the US Postal Service, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Department of Justice in Washington, DC, before joining Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s administration. Tshibaka has attempted to portray Murkowski’s Senate experience as a disadvantage, claiming that Alaskans “feel abandoned” by the senator.

Murkowski describes herself as a “third-generation Alaskan proudly serving as the first Alaskan born senator” on her official website. Her father, former Governor Frank Murkowski, initially appointed her to the position in 2002.
