In an interview with CNN, Murkowski took aim at her potential GOP challenger, Kelly Tshibaka, over the candidate’s ties to Alaska, the first salvo in what could become the most high-profile proxy war between Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell and former President Donald Trump in the upcoming midterm elections.

Murkowski alluded to a state inquiry into whether Tshibaka got a fishing license for a sportfishing event in 2019 without living in the state for the previous year.

“Fishing is highly important to Alaskans,” Murkowski added. “She has an issue with her fishing license as well as her residence.”

“That’s not what I’m interested in,” she clarified. “That’s what other people are concerned about.”

When asked about her possible opponent, Murkowski responded, “I’m not familiar with her. She only returned to the state a few years ago.”

Tshibaka, a former Alaska Department of Administration commissioner, has offered herself as a vessel for Trump supporters, earning the former President’s endorsement in June as he embarked on a revenge campaign against Republicans like Murkowski, who believed he should have been convicted for inciting the January 6 insurgency for high crimes and misdemeanors.

Tshibaka, who has questioned Biden’s victory, faced further scrutiny in Alaska a month after winning Trump’s support.

Tshibaka reportedly got a resident sportfishing license for a Kenai River sportfishing event in 2019 just eight months after she came back to Alaska, according to the Anchorage Daily News.
