Sherri Papini, 39, of Redding, was discovered with bindings on her body and injuries including a swollen nose and a “brand” on her right shoulder on Thanksgiving Day in 2016 after weeks of searching in California and several adjacent states.

She had gone missing on November 2nd. She told authorities at the time that she had been kidnapped at gunpoint by two Hispanic women, and she even gave an FBI sketch artist detailed descriptions of her alleged kidnapping.

Authorities claimed she was living with a former boyfriend approximately 600 miles (966 kilometers) away from her home in Orange County, California, and injured herself to back up her lies.

“When a young mother went missing in broad daylight, a community was filled with fear and concern,” U.S. Attorney Phillip Talbert said in a statement. “Ultimately, the investigation revealed that there was no kidnapping and that time and resources that could have been used to investigate actual crime, protect the community, and provide resources to victims were wasted.”

Papini Yet to Assigned an Attorney

Papini has yet to be assigned an attorney because she was only recently detained, according to Talbert’s office. Her first appearance in court has yet to be scheduled.

When she was interviewed by a federal agent and a Shasta County sheriff’s detective in August 2020, she was still lying about the kidnapping, according to the accusations. They showed her evidence that she had not been kidnapped and told her that lying to a federal agent was a crime.

Despite this, the allegations allege that she made fraudulent statements.

According to the accusations, she was reportedly awarded more than $30,000 by the California Victim’s Compensation Board based on the bogus story. According to a court document, they included money for visits to her therapist for “anxiety and PTSD treatment,” as well as the ambulance transport to the hospital after she surfaced near Sacramento.

She faces a charge of mail fraud in connection with the refund requests, which has a possible sentence of 20 years in prison while lying to a federal official carries a maximum punishment of five years.
