Officials reported that a 73-year-old California woman who was a lookout and kept an eye out for wildfires from U.S. Forest Service towers in Siskiyou County perished in the McKinney Fire.

According to a statement from the U.S. Forest Service, Kathy Shoopman’s first position was at the Baldy Mountain lookout in the Klamath National Forest, just west of the small settlement of Happy Camp, in 1974. She later worked as a lookout at Lake Mountain and Buckhorn.

Shoopman spent over 50 years of his life in the 200-person community of Klamath River, which was nearly completely destroyed by fire. A town hall, a few other businesses, and homes—including those in a trailer park—were all destroyed.

“We share this sorrow with each and every one of you and we know that individually, and as the supportive community that we are, we will find many ways to honor Kathy’s life and service and keep her spirit in all of our lives,” the Forest Service said in a Facebook post honoring Shoopman.

Shoopman was trying to evacuate when she died, according to Stokesberry, but the exact circumstances of her passing are still being looked into.
