Justin Crawford’s Career, What was his profession?

Between 1995 and 1998, Justin played in 32 AFL games for the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn, scoring 46 goals in total. Prior to the 1994 AFL draft, the Swans recruited Justin, who was two years younger than his brother Shane, from Finley via Tocumwal in the Murray Football League as a New South Wales zone selection player. He was a young midfielder who made his Swans debut in Round 3 of the 1995 season in a 104-99 loss to Brisbane at the Gabba.

He recorded 11 disposals in the game. After going on to play 10 games in his rookie year, Justin was nominated for a Rising Star award for his 26 disposals and two goals in Round 19’s 170-44 Swans victory over Fitzroy.

Sydney placed 12th in Ron Barassi’s final season as head coach, but under Rodney Eade’s leadership, the team advanced to the Grand Final and lost to the Kangaroos. As the Swans defeated the Hawks 90-84 at the SCG, Crawford made seven appearances and participated in the preliminary final against Hawthorn, where he faced off against his brother.

Crawford was then approached by Hawthorn, and the Swans agreed to sell him to the Hawks in 1997. There, he was reunited with his brother Shane, who went on to become an All-Australian four times and win the 2008 championship.

In his second season with the Hawks, he played a further 14 games, but he unexpectedly declined the offer of a two-year extension and quit football at the age of 21, citing a desire to travel. He eventually made a comeback to the game in 2005, when he played for South Fremantle in the WAFL.
