Paul Scott Howell, a businessman, was shot and killed in the driver’s seat of his GMC Suburban on July 28, 1999. A black male with a red bandana and 1–2 inches of hair visible between his ear and stocking cap was seen shooting Howell at the time, according to witnesses. Julius Jones had shaved his head at the moment. The murder weapon was discovered wrapped in a crimson bandana in Julius’ family home.

After being captured, Julius and Christopher were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a felony. Julius was found guilty and sentenced to death in 2002. After serving fifteen years in prison for driving the getaway car in Howell’s murder, Christopher was released in 2014. Christopher allegedly admitted to shooting Howell and framing Julius with at least three other persons. David McKenzie, Julius’ public defender at the time, later confessed in a 2008 statement that he gave a poor defense and pointed to five major problems in Julius’ trial.

Julius’ DNA was found wrapped around the murder weapon wrapped around the red bandana at his family’s house in 2017. The test only matched 7 of 21 genetic markers, according to Julius’ public attorney, and did not meet law enforcement criteria.
