Bavarian Inn Lodge founder Judy Zehnder Keller passes away at the age of 77.

Judy Zehnder Keller, the founder, and president of the Bavarian Inn Lodge in Michigan passed away on Wednesday. Frankenmuth, Michigan, on October 19, 2022, at the age of 77, according to her family.

According to a family member, she passed away from lung cancer that had gone to her brain.

“Long-time entrepreneur, community leader, women’s advocate, working mother, wife, and grandma,” was how she was described.

In 1960, Ms. Zehnder Keller began her employment at the Bavarian Inn, the family restaurant. In 1986, she started the Bavarian Inn Lodge and guided it as it grew to become one of the biggest indoor water park hotels in the state.

She was also the proprietor of Frankenmuth Cheese Haus.

“Today we mourn the passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, and thank the entire community for its support during this time,” her family said in a statement Wednesday. “Judy Zehnder Keller was a true pioneering businesswoman in our community, and her legacy will be long remembered by those who love the Bavarian Inn and our family’s commitment to this community.”

Zehnder Keller, a 1963 alumnus of Frankenmuth High School, went on to graduate from Michigan State University with a degree in hotel and restaurant management and a master’s in educational psychology.

She was honored by the National Restaurant Association, the Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association, and Michigan State University, which named her “Industry Leader of the Year” and “Alumna of the Year.” She was also the recipient of other community and industry awards.

Her passing occurs just a few days after that of Irene Bronner, the matriarch of the family that owns Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, Michigan’s largest and most renowned retailer of holiday decorations. Ms. Bronner, who was 95 years old, passed away on Sunday.

Her husband Don Keller, her three children Michael, William, and Martha Zehnder Kaczynski, as well as five grandkids, survive her.

Cederberg Funeral Home will have a private funeral service. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be donated to the Frankenmuth Community Foundation’s German Heritage Fund, CAN Council, and Underground Railroad programs.
