The attorney general’s office in the Dominican Republic’s National District province reported that former Major League Baseball player Juan Encarnacion has been charged with s*xual assault against his daughter. Encarnacion’s daughter is under the age of 18, and her mother claims Encarnacion s*xually assaulted her in May when the complaint was filed.

The National District Attorney General’s office also stated that Encarnacion is being held in prison at the Palace of Justice in Santo Domingo, the country’s capital, and that he will appear before a judge on Saturday afternoon. 

Rosalba Ramos, the head of the prosecution, said in a story published by the Dominican newspaper Diario Libre that the police had requested a year of preventative arrest against the former player. According to the prosecution, Encarnacion, 45, entered the minor’s room while she was sleeping and touched private regions of her body, perpetuating the alleged s*xual assault.

The prosecution’s indictment formally shows that Encarnacion’s conduct was in violation of Article 332, numbers 1 and 2, of the Dominican Penal Code, which allude to incest and carry a potential sentence of up to 15 years in jail. The nature of the charge prevents Encarnacion from being freed on bail in the Dominican Republic.
