“That was probably my most toughest week,” he said. “Only because that was the week that I lost my nanna. It was very hard for my family and I because we were separated because of COVID.

“The day of my semifinal performance was the day my family put her to rest and the fact that I wasn’t there, that hurt a lot . . . but I sang that for her. I could just see her screaming on the sidelines.”

Until recently, only the “four walls of my church” had heard Tavita’s voice, but he said he knew his family, and his nanna, would be so proud of how far he had come.

Despite being away from family throughout the competition, Tavita and the contestants “found family within each other”.

“They are all genuine, they each have a different, unique way of portraying the story when they sing and, like, to even be up against each of them, oh man, I’m not worthy,” he said.

“Being able to be amongst other people that are after the same dream as you, it’s inspiring.”
