Charles Pfau, a hairstylist famed for his ‘Blow Dry Bootcamps,’ passed away at the age of 57.
Jon Charles Pfau, a hairstylist, was formerly famous for his Blow Dry Bootcamps, which taught ladies how to tame their hair into a smooth, glossy look. In recent years, his eponymous salons in Uptown and Wayzata shuttered, and he teamed up with the MartinPatrick3 boutique to open Marty’s Barbershop in the North Loop.
Pfau, 57, died of natural causes on March 16 following a series of health issues, according to his wife. His wife of 33 years, Jill Pfau, described him as someone who had it all: a son and daughter, two small grandkids he adored, numerous proteges whose careers he had supported, and a career built around having fun with women.
“If you talk to anybody who knew him, everybody loved him, everything about him,” she said. “He was the most caring, giving man I ever met in my life.” On social media and in other online tributes, many people repeated his wife’s admiration. On April 7, a memorial service was conducted at the Medina Ballroom, with participants encouraged to wear a rock ‘n’ roll T-shirt, a scarf, or something orange in his honor.
Martin Keller, a spokesman for his businesses, described the hairdresser as “colorful, expressive, and always full of fresh ideas.”
During the 2008 financial crisis, Pfau devised marketing to reduce the price of a service by the same percentage lost in a customer’s 401(k).
“That was a wildly successful campaign he did,” Keller recalled. “It even made the evening news with Katie Couric.”
Pfau, of Plymouth, was born on July 20, 1964, in South Dakota. When he was a child, his family relocated to St. Cloud.
