THOUSANDS of people have expressed their condolences following the death of a “well-loved” member of the St Helens community. Overnight, news broke that local character John Smith, popularly known as “Johnny Welly,” had died. John Smith died quietly at 6.30 a.m. on Saturday in hospital following a brief illness, according to Sherdley Court Care Home in Rainhill.

On Monday, care home management will meet with John’s lawyers to discuss funeral arrangements, and more information will be provided as soon as possible. There’s also the option of organizing fundraising for some sort of monument.
