John Rutherford’s Career, What was his profession?

Rutherford, a right-handed opening hitter, earned a Baggy Green as the 204th man to play for Australia on an extensive tour of England, Pakistan, and India in 1956. At the tail end of the tour, he scored 30 in the drawn second Test of Australia’s first-ever tour of India at Brabourne Stadium in what was then known as Bombay (now Mumbai).

With Australia using eight bowlers in each innings, Rutherford’s wrist-spin also gave him a Test wicket, bowling Vijay Manjrekar for 1-11 from five second-innings overs. While he would never play Test cricket again, he helped pave the way for a generation of Western Australian heroes like Dennis Lillee and Rod Marsh to come after him. Rutherford, the first West Australian cricketer to represent his country, played one Test match against India at Brabourne Stadium in October 1956, hitting 30 runs and capturing one wicket. During the drawn second Test match of Australia’s inaugural tour of India, the leg-spinner dismissed Indian batter Vijay Manjrekar for 30 runs.

Rutherford, Australia’s 204th men’s Test cricketer, would never play another match for his country. In 67 first-class matches, the right-handed opening batter scored 3367 runs at 31.76, including six centuries and 15 half-centuries. Rutherford’s career came to an end abruptly when he suffered a stroke while playing for Western Australia in a 1960 tour match against the West Indies at the age of 31 — it was his final first-class match.
