Cornell saw the talents of a Sydney Harbour Bridge rigger, Paul Hogan while working as a producer for the television show A Current Affair in 1971.   Cornell became Hogan’s manager, and as “Strop” on his renowned television show, The Paul Hogan Show, he frequently appeared with him. 

He produced and co-wrote the screenplay for Hogan’s Crocodile Dundee, which went on to become Australia’s highest-grossing film.

Crocodile Dundee II, a successful sequel released in 1988, was again produced and directed by him.

In 1977, Cornell collaborated with Kerry Packer and Austin Robertson to establish World Series Cricket (WSC). Cornell offered the idea to Kerry Packer in 1976, based on a recommendation from Dennis Lillee (whom Cornell was managing at the time). The goal was to provide better financial benefits to the players.

Cornell was heavily involved in WSC player recruitment, traveling to New Zealand to sign players, for example (including Doug Walters). Cornell hired the Mojo advertising agency to create radio and television commercials for WSC, which included the creation of the jingle “C’mon Aussie C’mon.”
