On May 18, 2013, Kovacs, in his second year as a professional, set a season-best of 20.82 meters (68–3.75 feet)in the Tucson Elite Meet, placing him sixth in the United States.

With his first 70-foot throw, Kovacs won the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. With a throw of 70 ft 5.5 in, he finished third in the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships (21.476 m). Joe Kovacs won the 2014 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 25, 2014, at a unique location in front of the California State Capitol, with a personal best of 22.03m (72′ 3.5″), the world’s best throw for 2014.

On April 11, 2015, Kovacs improved his personal best (albeit not a stadium record) with a 22.35 m (73 ft 3+34 in)as a guest participant at UCLA’s Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational, taking the early season global lead by almost a full meter. It was the world’s longest throw since 2010 and moved him up to No. 12 on the all-time list.

He followed it up with a throw of 21.70 meters (71 feet and 14 inches). Kovacs improved again after winning his second National Championship in June, throwing 22.56 m (74 ft 0 in) in the Herculis event in Monaco. That throw propelled him above four Americans to become the eighth-best thrower in history and the best since 2003.

Kovacs qualified for his first Olympic squad after finishing second at the Olympic Trials on July 1, 2016. With a throw of 21.78 meters (71′ 5.5″), he earned silver at the 2016 Olympics “(Imaginative+ paraphrase). He came in second behind teammate Ryan Crouser, who set an Olympic record with a throw of 22.52 meters (73′ 10.5 yards). 

On October 5, 2019, Kovacs won the Gold Medal at the Outdoor World Championships with a final throw of 22.91 meters in the Shot Put. His wife trained him, and the two appear together in an Olympic Channel feature commercial.
