Longtime Estée Lauder Cos. executive Joseph “Joe” Gubernick passed away on Saturday at the age of 88.

The reason for his passing was not immediately known, but according to a statement by Lauder, Gubernick died quietly at his Pine Plains, New York, home with his family by his side.

Over the course of his career at Lauder, Gubernick held a variety of positions, most notably in the area of research and development. He contributed to the development of several of the most well-known and respected skin care products produced by the business, including Clinique’s Turnaround Cream and Lauder’s Night Repair and Fruition. He contributed significantly to the creation of Origins as well.

Gubernick joined the company in 1972 as senior vice president of R&D after leaving Revlon. He served in that capacity until 1985, after which he concentrated on developing the Origins brand, which went public in 1990. Joe returned to R&D in 1991 and remained there until 2000 when he took over the leadership of the corporate product innovation team. He was appointed chief marketing officer of the Estée Lauder company in 2008.

Gubernick founded In Ventures after leaving Lauder. Most recently, he served as the company’s principal advisor. Dr. Xi Huang founded I-On Skincare, which is reputed to use proprietary technology to remove and neutralize different types of iron from the skin.
