Yasmin “Jessie” Duarte was a South African politician and acting secretary-general of the African National Congress. Long-time anti-apartheid activist. She formerly held positions as Nelson Mandela’s personal assistant, a member of the Gauteng provincial cabinet (MEC), ambassador to Mozambique, and ANC spokeswoman before taking up her current role as deputy secretary-general of the ANC in 2012.

Yasmin “Jessie” Duarte, a longtime anti-apartheid campaigner and ANC deputy secretary general, passed away early on Sunday morning after a protracted battle with cancer.

Due to the seriousness of her sickness, Duarte (68), a political activist since she was a teenager, was forced to abandon her party work late in November. Since then, she has been on medical leave.

Duarte, a lifetime political activist who had served in government and as a diplomat, rose to the head of the ruling party’s hierarchy in 2012.

Family spokesperson Zane Dangor confirmed Duarte’s death early on Sunday, saying that she had fought bravely against the disease, to which she had finally succumbed.

She will be buried on Sunday afternoon.

Duarte held the position of South African ambassador to Mozambique from 1999 to 2003 after leaving her position as MEC.

At the ANC’s subsequent congress in 2022, Duarte stated that she would step down as deputy secretary-general.
