Editor and educator Jerry Ceppos passed away on Friday after a battle with sickness. He was 75.

Ceppos was once The San Jose Mercury News’ executive editor and senior vice president as well as Knight Ridder’s former vice president of news. Ceppos also left his imprint on the training of journalists.

In 2011, he was appointed to lead Louisiana State University’s Manship School of Mass Communication after serving as dean of the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno.

His wife, Karen Ceppos, reportedly stated that her husband passed away from sepsis after suffering a bad infection.

At the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, where he worked as a reporter, assistant city editor, and night city editor from 1969 and 1972, Ceppos had his first full-time professional post.

Before transferring to the San Jose Mercury News in 1981, he originally worked at the Miami Herald in 1972, where he served as assistant city editor, first national foreign editor, and assistant managing editor for news. He held the positions of executive editor, senior vice president, managing editor, and assistant editor there. Two Pulitzer Prizes were awarded by the newspaper when I was managing editor.

He also started the Viet Mercury and Nuevo Mundo editions in Spanish. At a company that produces print journalism, he backed digital efforts and effectively promoted diversity hiring.

He was appointed vice president of News of Knight-Ridder in 1999, which was the country’s second-largest newspaper chain at the time. In 2005, he was fired from his job.

From 2006 through 2009, Ceppos worked as a consultant for Leading Edge Associates, a management consulting firm in San Jose. He served as a media ethics fellow in 2007 at Santa Clara University’s Markkula Center for Applied Ethics.
