American Actor Jered Barclay dies at the age of 91

Jered Barclay, a well-known stage and screen performer who also found work as a voice actor for TV shows including The Smurfs and The Transformers, passed away at the age of 91.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Barclay passed away on Saturday in North Hollywood from MDS Leukemia, as revealed by his longtime friend and co-star in the Harvey Perr-directed two-person drama A Tantalizing, Myra Turley.

At age 3, Barclay made his stage debut with Judy Garland, Shirley Temple, and Sammy Davis Jr. in vaudeville. At age 6, he began his radio career, and at age 12, he joined the Clyde Beatty Circus. In the Everett Collection’s “The Man with the Golden Arm,” Jered Barclay is pictured bottom right.

His film career began in the middle of the 1950s, with an uncredited part as Frank Sinatra’s freaked-out junkie cellmate in The Man with the Golden Arm in 1955. He later appeared as a guest star in the early 1960s on Western TV shows like Rawhide, Bonanza, Cheyenne, Bronco, The Dakotas, Lawman, Colt.45, and Gunslinger. At the time, he was frequently billed as Jerry Barclay. Additionally, he had appearances on Peter Loves Mary, Hawaiian Eye, Surfside 6, and The Case of the Dangerous Robin. Additionally, he was in the 1962 television movie His Model Wife.

 To participate in two Edward Albee pieces at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 1962—Zoo Story and The Young Man in The American Dream—Barclay relocated to New York. He performed in Next Time I’ll Sing to You at the Phoenix Theatre the next year alongside James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons. Barclay performed on Broadway in A Patriot for Me and Marat Sade in 1963. (1969).

Director and Choreographer

Later, he was the director and choreographer of the Harvey Perr plays Rosebloom and Scandalous Memories in New York, as well as Sextet (1974), starring Dixie Carter at the Bijou Theatre on Broadway. He started a new career as an animated TV voice actor in the early 1980s, doing voices for shows including Trollkins, The Little Rascals, Richie Rich, Pole Position, and Foofur.

Additionally, he voiced characters on The Smurfs and appeared in more than a dozen episodes of the 1984–87 television series The Transformers as Cerebros and other characters. He also provided voiceovers for the Paddington Bear television program.

In the 1980s, Barclay also started a coaching career. He worked with artists he had known from his time in the theater, such as Josh Brolin, Carter, Rue McClanahan, Johnny Depp, Liza Minnelli, and Patrick Swayze.

By the middle of the 1990s, he had once more expanded and was working as an international travel photojournalist for 27 publications, covering 108 countries across all seven continents. He was the only foreign journalist chosen to cover the royal wedding in Bhutan, and Condé Nast Traveler published his article and pictures.
