Jennifer Sey, the chief marketer of Levi Strauss, has quit, alleging she was driven out after expressing her belief that schools should remain open during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Sey—a 20-year veteran of Levi’s who has been global brand president since 2020—said the company’s CEO, Chip Bergh, gave her a $1 million severance package in exchange for her signature on a nondisclosure agreement in an essay published by writer Bari Weiss’s Substack. She declined, though, in order to “preserve my voice.”

Sey’s essay, written as a mother of four, details her climb through the ranks of the San Francisco-based garment company, where she began as an assistant marketing manager in 1999. Sey “always felt encouraged to bring my complete self to work—including my political involvement” over her two decades at the company.

However, she claims that Levi’s legal, human resources, and communications departments urged her to be less vocal when she openly questioned pandemic-related school closures on the news, on social media, and through demonstrations.

“I felt—and still do—that the draconian policies would cause the most harm to those least at risk, and the burden would fall heaviest on disadvantaged kids in public schools, who need the safety and routine of school the most,” Sey wrote.

When asked by Forbes for comment, Levi’s representative said only that Sey had resigned from the firm and that brand tasks would be assigned to Chief Commercial Officer Seth Ellison on an interim basis until a replacement could be identified.

Despite opposition, Sey claims she pressed Levi’s to speak out on school closures, adding that the firm has a history of speaking out on political matters affecting its employees, such as LGBT rights, voting rights, and immigration.

While many marketers use their platforms and brands to take a stand on social issues, Sey is one of the few C-suite executives who publicly oppose his employer. Sey has already spoken out on a number of contentious issues, including She helped develop Athlete A—2020 Netflix’s documentary about Larry Nassar, the former doctor for USA Gymnastics who was accused and eventually convicted of s*xually assaulting gymnasts—and published a memoir about her mental health experience as a teenage gymnast in 2008.
