An Unconventional Theatrical Force, Jeff Weiss, Passes Away at 82.
Jeff Weiss, a playwright, and actor well-known for his appearances in both cutting-edge, unconventional works at obscure New York theaters as well as mainstream productions, including more than a dozen on Broadway, passed away on September 18 in Macungie, Pennsylvania, not far from Allentown. He was 82.
Steve, his brother, said that prostate cancer that had spread was to blame.
Beginning in the 1960s, Mr. Weiss played a pivotal role in New York’s experimental theater movement. His plays were performed at venues in Manhattan known for the provocative and bizarre, such as Caffe Cino in the West Village, La MaMa on the Lower East Side, and others.
Among these is his own Good Medicine and Company, a storefront theater on the Lower East Side that he ran with Carlos Ricardo Martinez, his co-star both onstage and in real life. His plays were occasionally performed in Allentown, where he was raised.
His writings are difficult to categorize and do not lend themselves to traditional storyline descriptions. Mr. Weiss spent the majority of his onstage time in the frigid water of a bathtub while performing “F.O.B.” (1972). In reaction to the AIDS crisis, Mr. Weiss produced “Hot Keys,” a late-night serial about a serial killer.
His shows sometimes lasted four, five, or even eight hours. It may be claimed that his most well-known and ambitious works spanned several decades. “… And That’s How the Rent Gets Paid” was the title. Initially performed in 1966 was Part I. In 1984, Part IV first debuted.
