Off-duty police officer accused of hitting political opponent at abortion-rights rally and running for Rhode Island state Senate
Jennifer Rourke, a Democratic state senator candidate in Rhode Island, claimed in a statement that she was punched in the face by her Republican opponent, an off-duty police officer, at an abortion rights rally at the State House in Providence on Friday.
Rourke claimed that when her confrontation with a counterprotester was being defused, “my Republican opponent Jeann Lugo repeatedly hit me in the face.”
Video of the event appears to show Rourke getting into a fight at the rally and then getting punched in the face very immediately after.
After surrendering himself in on Saturday afternoon, Erik Yanyar of the Rhode Island State Police told sources that Lugo was charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct.
In a statement posted on Twitter on Saturday, the Providence Police Department said “criminally investigating the actions of an off-duty police officer yesterday evening during a demonstration where a woman was beaten. After three years of service, the officer was put on administrative leave with pay this morning while a criminal investigation and administrative review are conducted.”
Lugo was “the off-duty officer involved in this incident,” the department said in a later tweet.
Lugo announced his resignation from the state Senate contest in a tweet that is no longer accessible.
“People like me frequently refrain from running for politics due to political violence like this. Across the nation, working-class candidates, as well as Black and Brown candidates, experience violence and threats “Black Rourke stated in her statement.
Two other people were arrested at the rally, according to authorities.
