Titans coach Justin Holbrook acknowledged his joy in giving Campbell his first start to the media on Friday ahead of the match, but maintained it had nothing to do with his father being a Titans great.

“I’m just really excited for him to get the opportunity to play with our boys,” he said.

“He has been terrific right through pre-season. He has been fantastic for our feeder club Tweed, and he fully deserves his opportunity. “It’s great for our club – Preston our number-one Titans player, to now have his young blokes following in his footsteps, and Jayden has earned that himself.

“While it is great for our club and his family, he has earned that off the back of his own performances.”

Jayden, like his father, will never be the biggest guy on the ground.

Campbell, who weighs just 80 kg, will be entrusted with carrying the ball from kick returns and rushing into players like Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Jesse Bromwich, and Tui Kamikamica.

If you ask his coach, however, the speedster will not take a step backwards.

“He’s just such a natural fullback – well, he’s a natural rugby league player,” Holbrook said.

“He is tough – there is not much of him and people get excited thinking they will be able to get hold of him, but he is just such a tough little kid that is skilful and plays with no fear. That is what we need this week – we’ve got a tough opposition, we’ve got to go there putting our bodies on the line.”

Campbell’s fluid running style, according to Braith Anasta, has aided in the creation of opportunities for his teammates.

“Plenty of energy and Marzhew on debut comes up with the try,” Anasta said.

“It was Campbell, who was just roaming out the back as he has done for the majority of the game. Marzhew with the dream debut. He is a powerhouse. He has had a couple of strong carries to start the game. Jayden Campbell he just glides. Herbert was the creator of that try but with Campbell you can tell that you have to focus on what he is going to do next because he has that footwork and speed, but also that ability to throw a nice little pass.

“He is a danger man and because their eyes are so much on Campbell it gives his outside men like Herbert and Marzhew a little bit more time and space.”
