Notorious “unruly tourist” James Nolan, who caused havoc across the North Island in the summer of 2019, has died in the UK.

Nolan’s relative wrote a tribute on social media where she called him the “greatest daddy to his large wonderful children”‘. “My big gorgeous brother Jimmy Nolan as much as we always had the fight been there all my life loved him like a big brother greatest daddy to his large lovely children and best spouse to my sister (sic),” relative Lucy Nolan said on Facebook, adding his death didn’t “seem real”.

Nolan was part of a group of tourists who were initially caught polluting and assaulting beachgoers at Auckland’s Takapuna before they went on to cause disruption across the North Island in 2019. Krista Curnow, who was on Takapuna Beach at the same time as the gang, told Newshub they threatened her after she challenged them about the waste they’d left behind.

Curnow shared a video on her Facebook page that showed a little child wearing a straw hat threatening to “punch your brains out”.

“There were maybe four or five ladies standing around me in a half circle basically egging each other on to beat me,” she said at the time. “At that moment, I backed up a little bit.” And it was just the beginning, with the tourists going on to ruin hotels, put ants in their meals so they didn’t have to pay, steal Red Bulls from the gas station, and end up in jail.

Petition to Deport

Ten thousand Kiwis signed a petition to get them deported and, outside a Hamilton Burger King, they were served their deportation notice. Nolan himself was charged with a slew of charges including assault using a car, dangerous driving, and fraud relating to roofing frauds.

He failed to appear in court many times and eventually managed to depart New Zealand after a Customs error at Auckland Airport. Customs said at the time Nolan “deliberately bypassed border restrictions by using a legal passport that was not his own”. “He used an eGate which employs biometric data to match and confirm the identity of a traveler. ”

The eGate noted more checks were needed on the passport. The image was instantly transmitted to a Customs officer, who wrongly recognized Nolan as the passport owner. “Unfortunately that was an instance of human mistake which shouldn’t have occurred. ” Customs then conducted a review into the methods that led to Nolan’s escape. Last year, the historic saga was converted into an opera.
