In 2008, he went to Afghanistan for the first time, and the following year, he returned as a sharpshooter with the Parachute Regiment. He was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade launched by Taliban insurgents during his second tour of duty, with two weeks to go before he was set to return home.
His left arm was severed just above the elbow, his left lung collapsed, shrapnel perforated several of his internal organs, and he broke his left knee and ankle. Eleven procedures were performed during his recovery and rehabilitation.
The attack ended his military career, but the resolve that had gotten him through the Parachute Regiment’s grueling training kicked in once more. He walked to the North Pole, ran marathons, competed in skiing events, and attempted to climb Everest before being inspired to compete in the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Van Gass learned to ski as a member of the Combined Services Disabled Ski Team and competed in tournaments. In 2011, he became the first South African-born person to climb the Manaslu in the Himalayas, the world’s eighth highest peak at 8,164 meters. Jaco finished third in the individual pursuit at the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, two years later. He took silver in the pursuit and gold in the kilo, scratch race, and omnium in 2020.
