Newton was born in the NSW town of Cessnock. In the 1970s and early 1980s, he was one of Australia’s most accomplished golfers. In 1971, he turned professional, and in 1972, he won his first professional tournament, the Dutch Open. Over the next decade, Newton won several tournaments, including the British Matchplay in 1974, the Buick-Goodwrench Open in 1978, and the Australian Open Championship in 1979.
Newton lost in a playoff to Tom Watson in the 1975 Open Championship at Carnoustie in Scotland. Newton shot a course record of 65 in the third round, despite injuring his ankle so badly on the practice tee before the championship that he had it professionally bandaged every day and was given painkilling injections.
Newton led during the back nine of the final round, but he bogeyed three of the final four holes. On the 72nd hole, Watson tied Newton with a 20-foot birdie putt. Watson beat Newton by one stroke in the 18-hole playoff the next day (71-72).
In 1979, Newton won the Order of Merit on the PGA Tour of Australia. In the 1980 Masters Tournament, he tied for second place with winner Seve Ballesteros.
