Campbell was taken into custody this afternoon and charged with four felonies, including two counts of capital murder, one count of first-degree murder, and one act of felony use of a firearm.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said police were notified about a “suspicious person” on campus shortly before 1:20 p.m. at a press conference held Tuesday night at the college. Campbell was deemed “suspicious” because he was “in a position he shouldn’t have been,” according to Geller.

After a short chat with Painter and Jefferson, the suspect opened fire on the two officers and fled, according to Geller.

Campbell was suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds when he was discovered, according to Geller, although it’s unclear whether they were from an officer’s gun or self-inflicted. Jefferson, she claimed, had not been armed.

Campbell’s wounds were treated and he was released from the hospital. He’s being held at the Rockingham County Jail right now. Several guns linked to Campbell have been discovered, both on and off-campus, according to Geller. There has been no indication of a motive for the killings.
