Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob is Malaysia’s next prime minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – After a brief meeting with Malaysia’s other state rulers on Friday (Aug 20), the King declared that Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob will be the ninth Prime Minister.
The palace published a statement minutes after the “special discussion” ended about 4.30 p.m., claiming Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah “has consented to appoint Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri” and will swear him in at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday.
The absence of the monarchs of Johor, Perlis, and Kelantan from the King’s 2.30 pm meeting has sparked discussion about how the royals would influence the formation of a new administration following Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation on Monday.
It’s unclear whether the three rulers participated in the meeting via video conference.
After his meeting with the King, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan informed reporters, “We understand Ismail Sabri has the majority with 114 MPs.”
However, sources close to the situation have informed The Straits Times that a potential flashpoint could be some of the monarchs’ desire for a unity government involving parties from all sides of the political divide.
This is ostensibly to avoid the instability that afflicted the Perikatan Nasional administration, which was led by Mr. Muhyiddin until he quit on Monday after less than 18 months in office. Mr. Muhyiddin’s majority was snatched away by the withdrawal of a handful of Umno MPs.
However, rumors have circulated that Johor’s royal family is opposed to interfering with Mr. Ismail’s Cabinet and other government appointments.
