A health campaigner, Inez Haereata Kingi. She worked tirelessly to promote the groundbreaking Tnohop Health Center, which opened in 1986 and combined Mori and western medical traditions. It was constructed using the work of Robina Cameron, a nurse who founded the Women’s Health League.
At the building’s debut in 1986, Kingi told RNZ that realizing Cameron’s vision was a dream come true. When Nurse Cameron passed away, we were unable to come up with an appropriate way to honor her memory because we had worked with and known her for many years and knew that she was a very strict taskmaster.
Kingi claimed that Cameron had the health center in mind when She kept Mori on the marae. She claimed that every member pitched in to help pay for the center. We created our own fund by charging each participant in the monthly meetings $2 in taxes, and we used that money to launch the Nurse Cameron Memorial Fund.
She was instrumental in the development of Te Utuhina Manaakitanga Trust, an organization that provides addiction treatment, in the 1990s after noting that many recently unemployed people were resorting to alcohol.
In 1997, she established Hei Oranga Niho mo te Iwi Mori to assist Maori with their dental requirements. Fifth-year dentistry students have the opportunity to gain practical experience by providing free dental care to the local population.
