Grimes was a vital member of Mitchell’s Royal Studios’ house band in Memphis, where he helped create some of the most iconic tunes and soul grooves of the 1970s.

Grimes continued to perform with Teenie Hodges and other musicians credited as Hi Rhythm or, on the 1994 CD Perfect Gentlemen, the Hodges Brothers after Hi Records folded in the late 1970s. For his notably solid rhythm behind the drum kit, Grimes was lovingly called “The Bulldog,” a moniker he gained from mentor and Hi Records founder Willie Mitchell.

Grimes eventually joined The Bo-Keys, and in 2021, he released his autobiography Timekeeper: My Life in Rhythm, which chronicled his life and career as a musician who left an unforgettable influence on his hometown’s musical tradition.
