As the Taliban conquered Kabul, an Afghan singer who has used her international renown to promote women’s rights wore an all-encompassing veil to flee her hometown.
Aryana Sayeed has split her time between Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Afghanistan, and has recently been in Kabul to launch a clothing business. In a weekend interview with Reuters, she said she got a call on Aug. 14 telling her that the Taliban were closing in on the capital. From 1996 to 2001, the Taliban imposed a harsh version of Sunni Islam that barred women from working and attending school.
Sayeed and her fiance, Hasib Sayed, had booked a commercial ticket on Aug. 15, the day the Taliban took control of Kabul, months after American troops had left the Afghan war.
Sayeed alleged in a Washington-area hotel that the crammed commercial flight never got off, describing panicked airport scenes punctuated by gunfire.
Fearing being recognized by Taliban fighters, she and Sayed left the airport and sought refuge with family in Kabul. The next day, they heard Taliban fighters combing their neighborhood door to house. Sayeed returned to the airport, this time wearing a veil that only revealed her eyes and flying with Sayed’s little cousin as if on a family vacation.

“We went through five checkpoints set up by the Taliban. One of them came to a halt in front of our vehicle “Sayeed remarked. “He said, ‘Go,’ as soon as he spotted me and the small kid.”
In a different automobile, Sayed was the first to arrive at the US military-run airport. “This is the fiance of a very renowned musician in Afghanistan,” one Afghan at the airport told a U.S. official, “and you should let him through because if they catch him, they will murder him,” Sayeed added.
Sayeed was contacted after Sayed, a Canadian citizen, was given entry. She was escorted to the airport by his relatives. Early on Aug. 17, the two boarded a US military plane and landed in Doha, Qatar. They arrived in the United States on August 19.
The couple intended to fly to Istanbul from Amsterdam on Tuesday.
“I was fortunate to be able to leave Afghanistan. But what about the other folks that are present?” said Sayeed. She was wearing a T-shirt with a United States flag on the sleeve that she had received in Doha. She had only the clothing she was wearing that evening when she left Kabul.
