Ex-UCLA Men’s Basketball Guard, Greg Lee, dies at 70

Gregory Scott Lee aka Greg Lee was an American professional basketball and volleyball player. He played college basketball for the UCLA Bruins, winning back-to-back national championships as their starting point guard in 1972 and 1973. He then played five games in the original American Basketball Association (ABA) and five games in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

His role in the game was as a point guard. He was very active in games in the year 1974-1980. He has won many competitions and has played for various teams in his career.

Greg Lee, the former UCLA Guard, passed away at age 70

Greg Lee, who helped UCLA to consecutive national championships in 1972 and 1973 as a starting guard under coach John Wooden, has died. He was 70 years old at the time. Lee died at a San Diego hospital on  Wednesday from an infection related to an immune disorder, the university said Thursday after being informed by his wife Lisa.

After his retirement, he used to teach mathematics at Clairemont High School in San Diego. The family and friends of Greg Lee are devastated and heart broken at this time. They do not want the media in this bad time.

Greg Lee’s Early Life

Greg Lee was born in Reseda, Los Angeles, on December 12, 1951. His father, Marvin Lee, played center for the UCLA Bruins. He attended Reseda Charter High School in his home neighborhood, where he was an All-American and named city section player of the year. Greg is American. He has a height of 6 feet 3 inches and a weight of 190 lbs.

He has not opened up about his mother and his siblings. There is not much information about what he did early years before basketball.

Greg Lee’s Basketball Career

Lee played for the UCLA Bruins from 1971 to 1974. When he arrived freshmen were not allowed to compete on the Varsity team. At the outset of his sophomore year, Lee became a starter on the Varsity. He and his classmates went on the 1971-72 UCLA Basketball team which had a record of 30-0. They went on to win the national title in 1972 over Florida State.

Lee again won the 1973 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament with a win over Memphis State. The Lee Bruins are the holders of the NCAA men’s basketball record of winning 88 games in a row. 

After his collegiate career ended, Lee was drafted by both the NBA and ABA. The Atlanta Hawks drafted him in the seventh round of the 1974 NBA Draft and the San Diego Conquistadors drafted him in the fifth round of the ABA Draft the same year. The next season, he moved to the NBA, appearing in five games for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Greg Lee’s Personal Life

Greg Lee was married to Lisa for 48 years until his death. Together, they had two children: Ethan and Jessamyn. Following his athletic career, Lee went on to become a teacher, working at Clairemont High School in San Diego teaching mathematics. He also coached varsity basketball and tennis.
