During the transport, Lopez broke free from his bonds, cut through the expanding metal, climbed out the bottom of the cage, and assaulted the driver. The cop got off the bus and got into a fight with convict Lopez, after which they both got off. The second officer exited the back door of the bus and approached convict Lopez, who then reentered the bus and drove down the road. Officers fired bullets at the inmate and shot the bus’s rear tire, rendering it immobile. The bus drove a short distance before exiting the highway.

New images of escapee Gonzalo Lopez have been released by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The images were acquired from security footage of the offender being escorted to the prison bus on the morning of the escape.
