Pell was consecrated as a priest on December 16, 1966, in St. Peter’s Basilica by Cardinal Gregorio Pietro Agagianian. Following completion of his studies at the University of Oxford, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in church history in 1971 with a thesis titled “The exercise of authority in early Christianity from about 170 to about 270,” he was awarded a Licentiate of Sacred Theology from the Pontificia Università Urbaniana in 1967.
