When Apple’s film “Tenzing” opens in October 2026, the posters will carry famous names like Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe. But the man at the center of the story is an actor most of the world has never heard of. His name is Genden Phuntsok, and his own life story is almost as remarkable as the one he plays on screen. He was a school teacher in the mountains of the Tibetan Plateau. He did not even have a Hollywood agent when he was cast as the lead in a major Apple film.

Who Is Genden Phuntsok?

Genden Phuntsok is a Tibetan actor from Ganzi, a high mountain region in Sichuan Province, China, on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The area is part of Kham, and its people are known as Khampa Tibetans. He was reportedly born on October 27, 1985, which would make him around 40 years old today. He grew up in a world of mountains, monasteries, and communities that have lived at high altitude for generations.

He speaks Tibetan, Mandarin, and English. His name is sometimes spelled Gendun Phuntsok or Gedun Phuntsok in different reports, but Apple and the film’s team use Genden Phuntsok.

Genden Phuntsok From School Teacher to Actor

Before acting, Phuntsok worked as an English teacher at a primary school in Litang, a high town in the same region. Around age 21, his life changed by pure chance when a film director met him and wanted to cast him. In a Chinese magazine interview years later, he remembered that the director tried to win him over by naming the big stars he had worked with, like Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok. The names meant nothing to him. At that point in his life, he barely knew what films were.

He said yes anyway. His first movie was “Wild Horse from Shangri-La” (2009), where he played the lead role. After that start he took acting seriously and joined an actors’ training class at the Beijing Film Academy, where he was the only Tibetan student in a class of 22.

The Oscar-Nominated Short Film

International viewers first saw his face in “The Butter Lamp” (2013), a short film by director Hu Wei. The film has a simple and clever idea: a photographer takes portrait photos of Tibetan nomad families in front of painted backdrops, and the whole story plays out in front of his camera. It was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the Academy Awards in 2015.

Working With Pema Tseden, the Father of Tibetan Cinema

The biggest influence on Phuntsok’s career was Pema Tseden, the first filmmaker in China to make feature films entirely in the Tibetan language. Across the region, actors and film lovers saw him as a teacher and a pioneer.

In Tseden’s film “Jinpa” (2018), Phuntsok played a hitchhiker who has spent years searching for the man who killed his father. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the award for Best Screenplay in the Horizons section. It was also backed by Jet Tone Films, the company of the famous director Wong Kar-wai.

One thing many websites get wrong: Phuntsok is not nicknamed “Jinpa.” That is the title of the film, and in the story both main characters share the name Jinpa. The truck driver was played by a different actor whose real name is also Jinpa. Genden Phuntsok played the hitchhiker.

He worked for that role in his own quiet way. To prepare, he soaked his hands in ice water again and again until the skin cracked, so his hands would look like those of a man who had lived a hard life on the road. Looking back on those days, he said that “even if flesh and bone were ruined, the heart inside was still beating.”

When the film won in Venice, Pema Tseden handed him the trophy. Phuntsok later recalled how heavy it felt, how clearly he could see his teacher’s name engraved on it, and how Tseden simply smiled at him. Pema Tseden died in May 2023 at the age of 53, a loss felt across Tibetan cinema. Phuntsok appeared in his final film, “Snow Leopard” (2023), playing a television reporter. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival a few months after the director’s death.

Other Films and TV Work

Phuntsok also acted in “Soul on a String” (2016), directed by Zhang Yang, and in the Tibetan-language film “Wind” (2020), where he played a character named Gonbo. In 2024 he appeared in “The City of Sunlight,” a Chinese TV series set in modern Lhasa, playing a member of an equestrian team.

How Genden Phuntsok Became Tenzing Norgay

The team behind “Tenzing” began searching for their lead actor in 2024. The role needed someone from the Himalayan world, someone who carried the mountains and the culture in his own life, not just in a costume. On June 3, 2025, Deadline announced that Genden Phuntsok had won the title role and shared the first photo of him as Tenzing Norgay. At the time he was cast, he had no representation in Hollywood at all.

Director Jennifer Peedom knew exactly what she was looking for. She made the award-winning documentary “Sherpa” (2015) and spent more than ten years building trust with the Sherpa community and with Tenzing Norgay’s family. When the project was announced, she said she had been working toward this film her whole career and was “incredibly grateful to Tenzing’s family for entrusting me with it.”

That family is directly involved. Norbu Tenzing, the eldest son of Tenzing Norgay, is an executive producer on the film. He has said that Peedom understands the Sherpa community, is deeply immersed in its culture, and has earned the trust of his people. For a story that was told for decades mostly from the Western point of view, that support carries real weight.

The Real Tenzing Norgay

Tenzing Norgay was a Sherpa mountaineer born around May 1914. Even he did not know his exact date of birth. On May 29, 1953, he and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand became the first two people confirmed to reach the top of Mount Everest, as part of a British expedition led by Colonel John Hunt. It was around his seventh expedition to the mountain. He had spent almost twenty years trying.

For Western climbers, the peak was Everest, a mountain to be conquered. For Tenzing and his people, it was Chomolungma, the mother goddess of the world, a sacred presence. The film builds its story around his side of that history.

Reports put the budget at around 25 million US dollars.

Filmed in Nepal

Filming began in Nepal in May 2025, in Kathmandu and the Everest region, under the working title “Tashi.” Nepali media reported shooting at Patan Durbar Square in Kathmandu and in places such as Jomsom, Bandipur, Sindhupalchok, and Khumjung village in the Everest region, with a foreign crew of more than 300 people. The production then moved to New Zealand, where filming wrapped on August 7, 2025.

When Can You Watch “Tenzing”?

“Tenzing” opens in select theaters in the United States on October 9, 2026, and starts streaming worldwide on Apple TV on October 16, 2026. Because Apple is giving it a theater run before streaming, many people expect the film to be part of the awards race in 2027.
